HourWarden
Beta. HourWarden is still in development: features change between versions and you may run into bugs. Keep a backup of your data (Settings → Backups) and check your hours before you invoice them. What changed

Your timesheet, filled in while you work

HourWarden reads the window in front of you once a second and books the time to the customer it belongs to: by Edge profile, document folder, remote desktop server, mail domain or Teams meeting. On Friday you check the week and copy it as decimal hours.

The HourWarden top bar: the customer you work for and the time since you started

Knows who you work for

It recognises the customer from the Edge profile, folder, mail or web domain, remote server or Teams meeting. No timers to start or stop.

Always in view

A slim bar at the top of the screen shows the customer and the time. Wrong? Switch with one click.

Timesheet done on Friday

Check the week, round to 6, 15 or 30 minutes and copy it as decimal hours. Export to Excel or CSV, or make a monthly report per customer.

Meetings and calls count too

Calendar appointments, Teams meetings and phone calls with a customer turn into time, so nothing slips through.

Your phone joins in

See what the computer records, pause or switch from your pocket, and run a timer for site visits.

All your devices in sync

Laptop, desktop and phone share customers, tasks and hours, end-to-end encrypted. Hosted by us or on your own server.

Tasks and Pomodoro

Plan tasks with an estimate and see the time spent. The Pomodoro timer keeps you focused for 25 minutes at a time.

Breaks that help

The 20-20-20 rule rests your eyes, and longer breaks show short animated exercises for hands, neck and back.

An activity log that writes your notes

Every document, page, mail and meeting with its time, grouped into kinds of work. One click puts it in an entry's notes, so a timesheet says what the hours were for.

Billable hours and budgets

See how much of your week is billable, give a customer a budget per week, and spot missing hours against your working day before Friday.

Made for Microsoft cloud work

Recognises Fabric and Power BI reports and semantic models, Azure resources, Entra, Data Factory, Databricks and Azure DevOps work items, and learns which tenant belongs to which customer.

Plugins for your tools

Outlook, Teams, VS Code, SSH, remote desktop, SharePoint, ticket numbers and more. Sandboxed, signed and open source; you choose what runs.

Try it in your browser

These are the real screens of HourWarden, running on a made-up week with fictional customers. Click around: switch customers, open the week, edit an entry. Nothing is saved, and nothing leaves this page.

The demo runs in your browser; it forgets everything when you close it. Open it full screen.

What is stored where

  • Your data lives on your own computer and phone, and everything works offline.
  • What you work on stays on your computer. Only customers, tasks and hours are synced.
  • Synced data is end-to-end encrypted with a key only your devices have.
  • Sign in with a password and, if you like, an authenticator app.
  • Use our hosted sync in the EU, or host it yourself on your own server.
  • No ads, no tracking.

Questions

How does HourWarden know which customer I work for?

It looks at the window in front once a second: the document and its folder, the website and its Microsoft tenant, the mail you read, the remote desktop server or the Teams meeting. It matches those with what you told it about your customers, and learns more as you answer its occasional questions.

Does my data leave my computer?

What you work on, the window titles and the activity log, stays on your computer. Only customers, tasks and hours are synced between your devices, and only if you create an account; synced data can be end-to-end encrypted.

Can I use it without customers, to track my own work?

Yes. Choose 'I track my own work' in the setup guide: all time goes to your own company, and HourWarden shows what you did per program, website and kind of work.

Which systems does it run on?

Windows 11 (installer or portable zip), Linux with KDE Plasma (.deb and .rpm) and Android. The app and the help are in English and Dutch.

What does it cost?

The app is free to download and works without an account. An account adds sync between your laptop, desktop and phone.

How do I keep up with new versions?

The Windows app offers updates itself; on Linux, Android and the portable version a notice says when a new version is out. The release notes are on this site, also as an RSS feed.

Getting started

  1. Install HourWarden on Windows 11 (or unzip the portable version), or on Linux with KDE Plasma.
  2. The setup guide asks for your customers and their mail domains. You can skip it.
  3. Work as usual. When it cannot tell the customer for 3 minutes, the top bar asks once.
  4. Optional: create an account to sync your laptop, desktop and phone.

Try it on your own week

The app works on its own without an account. An account adds sync between your devices.
